bp abandons plans to build biofuel plant in Port of Rotterdam

BP has stopped work on the biofuel plant in Port of Rotterdam, weeks after Shell has announced that it will cancel the construction of a biofuel production plant in the same port. The British oil and gas company has announced that the project had become too expensive to pursue its development. The production plant was expected to produce 10 000 barrels of sustainable aviation fuel per day by the end of the decade.

Platform Renewable Fuels regrets this decision and its broader impact on the energy security and strategic autonomy in Europe. This development sends a signal to the market and policy makers to take a closer look at the market failure in scaling up European production and to address the government (both European and the Netherlands) failure in this regard. The platform calls to set higher ambitions for the production of renewable fuels for road, aviation and marine sectors.
