EUBCE SAF Roundtable: Key messages from the SAF industry | 2026
May 18, 2026

Background
A SAF roundtable was organised with experts and industry players prior to the start of the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE) 2026. Key messages were derived based on 17 replies from the SAF industry representatives participating.
Key messages
- Jet fuel security plays a critical role in national fuel security as it reduces dependency on global oil markets and geopolitical risks
- Developing SAF from a diversified and domestic feedstock base (such as excess waste streams of lipids and ethanol) will help support resilience and reduce price volatility
- Public policies must support both demand side certainty and supply side investment to be successful,
- Dual purpose policies with "Stick and Carrot" are recommended to be combined for more effectiveness
- For instance by mandating SAF/eSAF blending quotas and attaching financial penalties to non-compliance
- Supply policies provide visibility on future cash-flow. This in turn increases project economies and attracts investors while supporting innovation required for the development of SAF pathways
- Public financing is also needed to bridge the gap between the current cost of SAF production and the price that the market can absorb
- Government-backed revenue-certainty mechanisms such as double sided auctions and production and investment tax credits are recommended to accelerate the deployment of SAF
