TNO: Strategic Collaboration Opportunities between the Netherlands-Brazil | 2026

Background

TNO published a briefing paper on the strategic collaboration opportunities between Brazil and the Netherlands specifically in the field of the energy transition and industrial transformation. This work was commissioned by the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate (Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat, EZK).

Four concrete collaboration opportunities are identified which are currently being further operationalised:

  1. Low carbon iron intermediates for the decarbonisation of the steel industry
  2. Industrial scale gasification of second generation biomass
  3. Integrated biomass mobilisation and valorisation approaches
  4. Chemical innovation and joint R&D collaboration

This briefing paper was presented during the World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition and the EUBCE - European Biomass Conference and Exhibition to both Brazilian and Dutch government and international stakeholders. This was an opportunity to exchange perspectives on industrial cooperation, market creation and low-carbon trade and innovations.

This briefing highlights the relevance of setting up strategic collaborations between the Netherlands and Brazil to help accelerate the energy transition and how to streghten this partbership in a way that is mutually beneficial.
