REFuelEU Aviation
This EU Regulation
- Applies from 2025 onwards
- Obliges aircraft fuel suppliers to increase the share of sustainable fuels supplied through 5-year intervals (see figure)
- Obliges airlines departing from EU airports to tank no more than the necessary fuel for the flight to avoid additional emissions related to extra weight
- Obliges EU airports to guarantee the necessary infrastructure to deliver, store, and refuel with sustainable aviation fuels
- Will ensure that a Union labelling system is set up about environmental performance for aircraft operators using sustainable fuels to help consumers make informed choices
- Sets sub-targets to increase the average share of synthetic fuels (e-SAF)
- 2030-2031: 1.2%
- 2032-2024: 2%
- 2035-2039: 5%
- 2040-2044: 10%
- 2045-2049: 15%
- 2050 onwards: 35%
- Specifies the feedstock types eligible for the production of sustainable aviation fuels including intermediate crops as defined in Annex IX of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED)
- Excludes the use of certain feedstock types for the production of aviation fuels such as:
- Food and feed crops
- Palm and soy deribed materials
- Palm Fatty Acid Distillate (PFAD)
- Soap stock and its derivatives

Hernieuwbare brandstoffen zijn essentieel om een fossielvrije toekomst te realiseren, omdat alleen inzetten op waterstof en elektrificatie niet snel genoeg gaat om de klimaatdoelen te halen. Deze campagne belicht problemen, kansen en misvattingen met behulp van prikkelende stellingen om aandacht te vragen voor het opschalen van hernieuwbare brandstoffen.
