PHB input for the call for evidence Renewable Energy legal framework after 2030

Background

Platform Renewable Fuels has provided input to the European Commission call for evidence on the Renewable Energy legal framework after 2030. We note that the Renewable Energy Directive has in scope three main sectors. In our response, we focus on providing feedback on the legal framework to increase the share of renewable energy in the transport sector.

We provide the following recommendations

  • Withdraw electricity for meeting the targets and to keep the mandates to replacing the liquid and gaseous fuels with renewable fuels which will result in more emission reductions
  • To distinguish between mature technologies and submandates to support key new feedstocks and technology pathways to reach the market
  • To base feedstock eligibility on clear principles applicable to all sectors
  • To include in the impact assessment options to stimulate “homegrown” renewable fuels based on the renewable electricity and biomass availability in Europe
  • Physical traceability system for the Proof of Sustainability would strengthen the transparency in the renewable fuel supply chains
  • To expand the scope in ReFuel EU Aviation to all planes and to include regional airports and to expand the scope to all vessels under 5000 tonnes in the FuelEU Maritime
