Factsheet
FuelEU Maritime
This EU Regulation
- Applies from 2025 onwards to vessels larger than 5000 gross tonnage
- Covers 100% of energy used on ships travelling within the EU/EEA and 50% on ships travelling into or out of the EU/EEA
- Obliges vessels to connect to onshore power supply for their electrical power needs while moored at quayside, unless they use an alternative zero-emission technology
- Obliges vessels calling at European ports to reduce greenhouse gas intensity of the energy used on board through 5-year intervals (see figure below)
- Specifies that all fuels that reach a lower carbon intensity can be used to lower the carbon intensity of the energy used on the ship
- Considers certain type of biofuels and biogas to have the same emission factor as the least favorable fossil fuel pathway for that type of fuel:
- Biofuels and biogas that do not meet the sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions saving criteria
- Biofuels produced from food and feed crops
RFNBO incentives
- Applies a subtarget of 2% from 2034 if the share of RFNBO is less than 1% for 2031
- Sets specific reward for the use of RNFBO count as double towards the target until 2033
