Carbon Accounting for Renewable Fuels - One day course

Vanaf 2026 wil Nederland gaan sturen op de klimaatimpact van hernieuwbare brandstoffen, op een zo laag mogelijke CO2-intensiteit; dat betekent dat ketens die de hoogste reductie hebben (of zelfs negatieve emissies behalen) aantrekkelijk worden.
Na het volgen van deze cursus kan je uitleggen dat hoewel hernieuwbare brandstoffen CO2-uitstoten, deze toch de impact op het klimaat kunnen terugbrengen. Ook leer je wat er met "net-climate neutral" bedoeld wordt en krijg je inzicht in hoe je op verschillende plekken in de keten de carbon footprint verder kan verlagen.

• Je krijgt een overzicht van de relevante beleidscontext in Europa en de achterliggende methodologie.
• Je kent de regelgeving in Nederland en je begrijpt hoe in het huidige systeem te voldoen aan de verplichte doelen en begrijpt wat er per 2026 gaat veranderen.
• Je weet de beter presterende hernieuwbare brandstofketens te identificeren of weet aan te geven waar in de keten meer winst te behalen valt.

Uiteindelijk kan je zelf de broeikasgas-besparing uitrekenen aan de hand van de volgende voorbeelden: een RFNBO, liquified/compressed biomethaan, perennial crop on severely damaged soils, en waste-to-fuel ketens.

Deze cursus is voor iedereen die te maken heeft met hernieuwbare brandstoffen in wegvervoer, binnenvaart, zee- en luchtvaart en graag de beleidscontext goed wil begrijpen.

Background and learning targets

From 2026 onwards, the Netherlands want to focus on the climate impact of renewable fuels, aiming for the lowest CO2-intensity; this will lead to value chains with the highest emissions reduction (or even negative emissions) will become more attractive.
After completing this course, you'll be able to explain how renewable fuels achieve lower climate impacts, even though they still emit CO2. You'll also learn what is meant with "net-climate neutral" and gain insight into how you can further reduce the carbon footprint at different points in the supply chain.

• You will get an overview of the relevant policy context in Europe and the underlying methodology.
• You will understand the regulations in the Netherlands, how to comply with the mandatory targets in the current system and what will change as of 2026.
• You will be able to identify the better performing renewable fuel value chains and to pinpoint where in the chain more savings could be made.

In the end you will be able to calculate greenhouse gas reductions for the following examples: an RFNBO, liquified/compressed biomethane, perennial crops on severely damage soil, waste to fuel chains.

This course is for everyone working with renewable fuels in road transport, shipping and aviation and wanting to better understand the policy context.

Intro webinar

Als voorbereiding op de workshop biedt het platform een webinar aan op 8 mei. Deze webinar zet alvast de Europese beleidscontext en de beginselen van de carbon accounting methodiek uiteen. Deelname aan de webinar wordt aangeraden maar is optioneel.

In preparation for the workshop the Platform will host a 1 hour webinar on May 8th to get you up to speed on the European policy context surrounding renewable fuels and on the basics of carbon accounting methods. This webinar is optional but recommended.
