BioMob #4 design workshop: how to look at biomass availability data

How to think about flexibility and circularity in biomass availability modelling?

Background

Platform Renewable Fuels together with Energy Innovation NL (previously Topsector Energy) and the Green Elephant Alliance invite you to join the 4th edition of the Biomass Mobilisation (BioMob) event where we will be discussing biomass availability modelling.

The transition to the bio-based economy is faced with a recurring question: is there enough biomass? This question can be challenging to answer whilst studies modelling biomass availability potentials can lead to wide ranges of results.

Since flexibility is extremely important in the new biobased and circular system, and also in the new renewable electricity system, we would like to understand how the current biomass availability modelling is taking into account the inherent dynamic nature of supply and demand, options for optimal use, how to look at actor's behaviours and context based constraints.

Aim of the session

The aim of the design workshop is to identify how to organise data modelling that supports flexibility and circularity. This will provide better policy information and a stronger data position for investments. We propose to take a decentral data approach. In this interactive session we will assess the data sources. Availability of data: to what extent are these  linked to GIS-data systems and how to build open source bottom-up data models.

Preliminary programme :
  • 10:00 - Welcome and setting the scene - Loes Knotter (Platform Hernieuwbare Brandstoffen)
  • 10:10 - Insights from agent based modelling for the biomass value chain - Maurice Mommen (Energy Innovation NL) and discussion
  • 10:45 - How to think about time and circularity: assessing the circularity of biomass residues  - Jan Broeze and Wolter Elbersen (WUR) and discussion
  • 12:15 - Lunch
  • 13.00 - How to look at current data models? - Carlo Hamelinck (studio Gear Up)
  • 13:30 - Reflections from Karl Friedrich Cyffka (DBFZ Resource Database) on data position for investors and how to invest in biomass feedstock mobilisation on degraded land (online)
  • 14:00 - 17:00 Co design session: reflections on modelling insights and recommendations for next steps
