NEa: ik ben groen, besmeur mijn reputatie niet | 2025

Background

The Netherlands Emissions Authority (NEa) together with the police’s environmental team, Customs and the Ministry of Infratructure and Water Management recently shared a flyer targeting employees of renewable fuel production companies and transporters. The flyer calls upon employees of biofuel supply chains and truck drivers delivering renewable fuel feedstocks to report when they have doubts that unsustainable feedstock may be used for the production of renewable fuels.

Questions that we have as a Platform:

Increasing the transparency of renewable fuel supply chains is  a core theme of Platform Renewable Fuels to ensure that renewable fuels are traceable and sustainable and we agree that harmful renewable fuels which are a product of unsustainable feedstocks should not be used.

We are curious to see how the NEa currently views whether these risks will be adequately addressed with the UDB. As a Platform, we are asking how market participants and regulators will bring these supply chains into the Digital Trust environment. We believe this will both make corporate risks more manageable and strengthen the NEa's supervisory position.

This flyer illicits questions for which the Platform calls upon the NEa to bring forward a better digital system to monitor this chain digitally like we have developed in a joint innovation project with the Dutch Blockchain coalition. The warnings that are pointed out in the flyer can then be made visible in a digital environment where the route information and timestamps of feedstock delivery and processing can be verified.
