IFP Energies Nouvelles: Life cycle assessment of e-/bio- methanol and e-/grey-/blue- ammonia for maritime transport | 2025

IFP Energies Nouvelles published a report commissioned by CMA CGM providing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the greenhouse emissions of alternative marine fuels with a focus on methanol and ammonia. In the context of ambitious 2050 net-zero greenhouse gas emissions targets set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and EU regulations, there is an increasing need for decarbonisation in the maritime sector.
The study brings forward a comprehensive assessment of alternatives marine fuels and explores the variations from different electricity sources, transport distances and regulatory framework to find their true decarbonisation potential.
