Retrospective on joint workshop with German Platform InnoFuels and ETIP Bioenergy: Renewable fuels for a resilient society

Introduction

Platform Renewable Fuels in collaboration with ETIP Bioenergy and German Platform InnoFuels organised an online workshop on renewable fuels for a resilient society. We look back on a successful event where the relevance of this topic was clearly demonstrated from the different contributions. However, there are still challenges ahead that must be addressed for Europe's energy system to be prepared in times of crisis. We must rethink our instruments for strategic autonomy.

The online workshop focused on the central question of how renewable fuels can enhance the resilience of Europe’s energy supply, using technologies that are already commercially available, scalable, and ready for immediate deployment. We must organise our system to promote more use of biomass and bioenergy as they contribute to resilience by enabling defossilitation of our energy system, developing the circular economy and improving biodiversity through sustainable practices.

Takeaways
  • Currently the market mechanisms are failing to promote production in Europe. There are no market instruments that are specifically focusing on incentivising renewable fuel production in Europe. The market is suffering from this lack of instruments and which pushes it to favour the import of renewable fuels. In addition, there is no designated desk where market players can bring this issue to.
  • We must create incentives targeting the use of local and regional resources with European-grown feedstocks
  • The acceleration and production of renewable fuels comes down to addressing practicalities around access to renewable energy sources and biomass, blending capacity and locations and how to get fuels to standard.
  • Renewable fuel production is ready to scale, all the necessary elements are already in high TRL. There is enough capacity and the technology is ready. Innovations needed are to address questions regarding how do we get a functioning system for European renewable fuels.
