PHB Webinar: How to improve the price position of renewable fuels?

Background
On January 22, 2026, Platform Renewable Fuels hosted a webinar on how to improve the price position of renewable fuels. This webinar is the first of a series where we analyse the effect of different policy instruments on the price of renewable fuels at the pump. In this analysis, we focused on the role of Excise duty also considering the ETS and ERE prices.
Takeaways
- Excise duty represents a significantportion of the cost consumers pay at the pump for their fuel and therefore, differentiated excise duty tariffs for renewable fuels will improve the marketposition of renewable alternatives compared to fossil fuels
- However, when exploring changing excise duty, several challenges must beconsidered:
- The implication on government income of lowering excise on renewable fuels and how to compensate for this.
- Lowering excise duty of renewable fuels might not directly translate in the price at the pump for consumers.
- The interplay between excise duty and other policy instruments such as the ERE system increases the complexity and should be better understood.
