PHB: Vergroten van duurzame kerosineproductie in Nederland | 2026

Summary

The Dutch Platform Renewable Fuels wrote an opinion article as a response to the Dutch Financial Daily (Financieel Dagblad) reporting that kerosene supplies are drying up in The Netherlands. However, this is an opportunity for The Netherlands to increase access to kerosene by accelerating the scaling up of its own sustainable aviation fuel production.

There are already parties in The Netherlands like Neste and SkyNRG (with their facility under construction in Delfzijl planned to start in 2028) which are or will be producing sustainable aviation fuels from different types of raw materials that do not get in the way of food and feed production which are available worldwide but also in Europe.

Other parties like Power2X and Advario want to produce sustainable aviation fuel from green methanol. This methanol could also be developed based on raw materials that are available in Europe such as renewable electricity and biomass residues.

Another possible route could be with the use of Lanzatech and LanzaJet technology that converts carbon monoxide emissions from steel production into ethanol which could also be turned to a sustainable aviation fuel. Capturing emissions from Tata Steel via this process could lead to producing  the equivalent of almost the annual demand for aviation fuels in The Netherlands in 2023.

In sum, there are many pathways and feedstock options that could be very attractive to secure access to aviation fuels, increase flexibility and energy independence for The Netherlands and Europe.
