New version of the European Standard NEN-EN 590:2025 setting a limit to abrasive particles in diesel fuel

New version of European Standard NEN-EN 590:2025

Since July 31 2025, a revised specification has been published for diesel fuel which sets a first clear limit to abrasive particles in diesel. This new standard is relevant to producers, distributors and users of diesel fuels. The limits on abrasive particles ensures higher fuel quality and less risk of damage.

Since 2013, wear and tear and damage to vehicle fuel injection systems has been signalled by several European countries. The European Technical Commission for Petroleum Products has conducted research pointing to the small hard particles in imported diesel being the cause. The standard has now been revised to include a limit on the number of abrasive particles which can be demonstrated using the IP630 test method. The standard also describes where in the chain the control on the limit must take place.

Change of minimum density summer diesel

Another major change in the NEN-EN 590:2025 is the reduction in the minimum density for summer quality diesel. This makes it possible to mix in more renewable fuels.
