IMO Net-Zero Framework adoption delays

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has suspended the debate on its proposed Net Zero Framework for a year, halting what was expected to be the first global climate regulation for shipping. The pause follows heavy pushback from the U.S. and others, ultimately stalling progress.

The suspension avoids a direct vote on the framework, sparing countries from choosing sides. The IMO will continue to work on the all-important NZF guidelines, and more specificity on some elements – e.g., default GFIs especially for LNG, how the Net Zero Fund will work and how funds will be disbursed, the design of the Zero or Near Zero (ZNZ)  Reward – may win over some member-states, but also risk losing others

For the shipping industry, the delay means another year of uncertainty. Companies must still meet EU climate targets while waiting to see if the IMO Net Zero framework will move forward.
