Factsheet: Clean Fuel Contracts

Background
Renewable fuels play a fundamental role in reducing emissions from transport and logistics activities next to electrification. However, renewable fuels can be similar to fossil fuels in essence as they make use of the same infrastructure and cannot always be easily be distinguished. Sometimes, in the case of segregateds upply chains the biogenic characteristics of the fuel can be confirmed through lab tests. However, in reality, during trade, distribution and storage of renewable fuels, their specific properties can be difficult to trace.
The sector proposes a method to track the sustainability information of fuels as they move through the supply chain. In the methane sector the sustainability information is currently confirmed through presenting a Guarantee of Origin (GO). Therefore, the sector has explored a “Clean Fuel Contract” system as a way to strengthen the transparency of renewable fuel supply chains.
