Workshop
Renewable fuels for resilience and strategic autonomy by Dutch Platform Renewable Fuels & German Innofuels
The Dutch Platform Renewable Fuels and the German Innofuels invites you to join our joint workshop on how renewable fuels can contribute to the resilience of our societies.
The resilience of our energy systems for society and defence purposes is currently based on the import of fossil fuels. This makes Europe dependent on third countries. Renewable fuels produced in Europe from European raw materials (renewable electricity, biomass) can help to improve European strategic autonomy and make our energy supply more resilient.
Among other things, we see the Critical Stock Obligation (CSO) as a potential lever to integrate renewable fuels into our emergency stocks and thus improve our resilience. Currently, the CSO – which is managed in the Netherlands by COVA and is based on an EU directive – requires a fuel stockpile for approximately 60 days to keep society running. Historically, this stockpile has been designed around fossil fuels. We recommend amending the legislation surrounding the CSO so that a certain proportion of the mandatory stockpiles must consist of renewable fuels, in particular fuels from a combination of fuel and raw materials derived from renewable sources.
These and other ideas will be explored in the workshop, to be held in Frankfurt on the 6th of November. Additionally, we invite stakeholders to join us on the 7th of November for a visit to the Energy Lab of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where we will see, among others, Power-to-X technology, and integrated solutions for sector coupling (heat, mobility, electricity) at pilot scale.
