IEA Liquid biofuels - Feedstock forecast

March 7th, 2023.
Jeremy Moorhouse from IEA presented numbers on the possibility of a supply crunch for biofuels, with used cooking oil, animal fats and other residues approaching supply limits over the next five years.
Large biomass potential lies not with these oil-based feedstocks, but with agricultural residues, forestry residues, MSW, short rotation woody crops and forestry plantations. The supply potential of this category amounts to 44,5 exajoules per year.
However, to access these feedstocks, we are in need of a technology base that is currently underdeveloped. Government programmes and industry innovation will be necessary to scale-up the production capacity of these technologies.
