FUEL-UP: New project producing advanced biofuels for aviation and marine sector

Fuel-Up is a new EU Horizon funded project aimed at defossilising the the aviation and marine sector by converting biobased waste streams into advanced biofuels. The project was launched on January 1st, 2024 and is run by a consortium that includes Dutch stakeholders BTG biomass technology group, BTG NeXt (a Platform member) and Ketjen (formerly known as Albemarle).
The conversion process involves pyrolysis oils derived from lignocellulosic feedstocks and biogenic waste, which is used to produce stabilized deoxygenated pyrolysis oils. These can then be processed into a fully hydrotreated oil in a refinery. The demo-scale project aims to validate and demonstrate the full value chain of the production of advanced biofuels from these biogenic feedstocks, with 45-50% going towards aviation fuels, 30-35% towards marine diesel and 20% towards heavy naphtha.
